It’s understandable to be skeptical of tech leaders’ grand visions for AI, but this shouldn’t obscure the technology’s significant potential. Nearly 70 years after the first artificial intelligence conference—where pioneers optimistically predicted rapid progress—the field is now poised to transform our lives. Achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI) isn’t necessary for this transformation.

The remarkable progress of large language models, like ChatGPT, shows that AI advancements have not plateaued, despite some critics’ claims. Dismissing the capabilities of OpenAI’s GPT-4, Anthropic’s Claude 3, Meta’s Llama 3, and various Microsoft Copilots as mere linguistic tricks overlooks their substantial impact.

AI is already revolutionizing sectors from healthcare to education, and its influence will continue to grow. While it’s wise to maintain a healthy skepticism towards industry leaders, recognizing AI’s genuine potential is crucial.
